چکیده

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of salinity on the survival and growth of a freshwater mussel Unio crassus, from a Mediterranean stream (Sarıçay Stream) in south-west Anatolia, Turkey, which has highly variable environmental conditions and a salinity gradient. A total of 250 similarly-sized U. crassus were collected from a stream in the species’ native range and transferred in ice to Sarıçay Stream. The length, width, height and weight of each individual were measured before and after the sampling period, a period of 286 days. Significant increases were detected in the height, width and weight of mussels at all sampling points during the study, with the exception of weight in the sampling station third with salinity of 3‰. Increase in mussel weight was highest at the second station (19.29%) with a moderate salinity (1.5‰), while that with a growth loss was observed at the third station (-1.56%) with the highest salinity concentration (3‰). Survival rates over the duration of the study were 60%, 56%, and 66% at stations 1-3, respectively. All mussels were dead at the fourth (salinity 4.5‰) and fifth stations (salinity 6‰) at the end of the experiment.

A floating cage system for rearing freshwater mussels Anodonta anatina and Unio mancus in Piedmont region (NW Italy)

This research represents the first attempt in Italy to develop a cage system for adult freshwater mussel stocking, for extensive farming, that was realized from 2003 to 2005 in NW Italy. Two autochthonous species of Italian freshwater mussel were used: Anodonta anatina and Unio mancus. 5133 mussels were collected and successively stocked in floating cages in 5 different sites in a lake. This st...

Occurrence of Unio Crassus (Bivalvia, Unionidae) Depending on Water Chemistry in the Foreland of the Polish Carpathians

Thick shelled river mussel Unio crassus (included in IUCN Red Data List) is a benthic, filter-feeding animal very susceptible to any changes of water chemistry. In this paper we report on the new sites of this species in the Małopolska region – an area of strong anthropogenic pressure. Physical and chemical parameters have been compared between 8 rivers inhabited and not inhabited by the mussel...

On the reintroduction of the endangered thick-shelled river mussel Unio crassus: The importance of the river's longitudinal profile.

Freshwater mussels of the order Unionida provide important ecosystem functions and services. Unfortunately, some previously widespread species are now seriously endangered. To restore the historical range of the population of Unio crassus in the Biała River, southern Poland, the species was reintroduced into a series of 'stepping stones' joining two remnant populations. During the first phase o...

Molecular markers for genetic diversity, gene flow and genetic population structure of freshwater mussel species

Freshwater mussel species are in global decline. Anthropogenic changes of river channels and the decrease of autochthonous fish population, the natural hosts of mussels larval stages (glochidia), are the main causes. Therefore, the conservation of mussel species depends not only on habitat conservation, but also on the availability of the fish host. In Portugal, information concerning most of t...
